Arthritis

The word arthritis is often used as a blanket term for joint pain, but not all arthritis is the same. Understanding the difference between osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis is important because the cause, progression, and treatment can be very different.

Although symptoms may overlap, what is happening inside the joint is not the same.

What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is commonly described as wear-and-tear arthritis. It occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones gradually breaks down over time. This can lead to friction, stiffness, and pain within the joint.

Osteoarthritis is more likely to develop with aging, prior joint injuries, repetitive joint use, or structural changes. Common features include:

  • Joint pain that worsens with activity
  • Stiffness after movement rather than prolonged morning stiffness
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Pain that improves with rest

Inflammation may be present, but it is usually secondary to joint damage rather than driven by the immune system.

What is inflammatory arthritis?

Inflammatory arthritis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints. Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis fall into this category. Inflammation is the primary cause of pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Symptoms often include:

  • Morning stiffness lasting an hour or longer
  • Swelling, warmth, and tenderness in joints
  • Fatigue or flu-like feelings
  • Symptoms that improve with gentle movement

Because inflammatory arthritis can lead to joint damage if left untreated, early identification and appropriate treatment are especially important. Knowing which type of arthritis is present helps guide care and protect long-term joint function.
